Oct 09 | Women's Volleyball
NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ – The Rutgers University volleyball team (8-11, 3-3 BIG EAST) earned another conference victory, as the Scarlet Knights swept Georgetown (5-13, 1-5 BIG EAST) 3-0 (30-23, 31-29, 31-29) on Sunday afternoon at the College Avenue Gymnasium.
Down 29-26 and facing game point, the Scarlet Knights rallied to score five straight points, taking game two and a 2-0 lead in the match. After a Georgetown attack error, Rutgers posted a pair of block assists and a service ace to lead 30-29. The game two victory was capped by an emphatic block solo from junior Tamarie Macon (Fayetteville, NC).
Rutgers received strong play from its trio of outside hitters, as junior Lora Yankauskas (Paramus, NJ) recorded a match-high 12 kills, followed by senior Courtney Stout (San Marcos, CA) and freshman Kyra Thompson (Tucson, AZ) with 11 apiece. Freshman Roxy Calder (Oceanside, CA) led with 21 assists, while Macon added 14. Thompson also posted a season-high five service aces to spark the Scarlet Knight offense.
RU’s defense was outstanding, as the Scarlet Knights out-blocked the Hoyas 11-6. Sophomore Amanda Meyer (Naperville, IL) tallied five block assists, while Stout chipped in five total blocks (one solo, four assists) and senior Ashleigh Young (Albany, OR) had four block assists.
“This win should give us a tremendous amount of confidence,” said interim head coach Orlando Gonzalez. “In the past few matches we’ve proven that we can come from behind and win. I am very proud of the way the team played.”
Rutgers will play the final contest of its five-match homestand against the Villanova Wildcats on Saturday, Oct. 15, at 2:00 p.m.
