PISCATAWAY, NJ – Junior guard Quincy Douby scored 19 points, grabbed eight rebounds and dished out four assists as the Rutgers men’s basketball team opened the 2005-06 season with a 66-46 victory over Austin Peay in a first-round South Padre Island Invitational game.
Douby, whose eight rebounds tied a career high, was 5-for-11 from three-point range while while junior swingman Marquis Webb added 17 points for Rutgers (1-0) on 4-for-7 shooting from beyond the arc. The four made three pointers by Webb is a career high.
Rutgers’ stifling defense was the difference in the game as the Scarlet Knights limited Austin Peay (0-2) to two field goals over the final 16:13, holding the Governbors to 30.0 percent from the field for the game.
The game marked the return of junior forward Adrian Hill. The 6-8 Hill, who missed all of last season with a knee injury, scored two points, grabbed three rebounds and showed tremendous tenacity on defense in his 13 minutes of action.
Maurice Hampton had 16 points and Zac Schlader added 10 for Austin Peay, which had 12 turnovers. The Scarlet Knights held a 45-26 rebounding advantage.
Freshman guard Anthony Farmer made his debut at point guard for Rutgers with six points and a game-high six assists.
Rutgers took control of the game in the first half by scoring 10 consecutive points to seize a 12-4 lead. The Governors got no closer than four for the remainder of the half, and during one stretch were held 9:35 without a field goal.
Rutgers led 32-20 at the half. The Governors pulled within eight points in the second half but Rutgers responded with a 13-2 run to open a 49-30 advantage with 8:24 left to play.
Austin Peay was 1-for-6 with four turnovers during the drought, and got no closer than 15 for the remainder of the game. The Governors scored 13 of their final 18 points from the line.
Rutgers will host Delaware State on Tuesday night at the RAC in a second round game of the South Padre Island Invitational. The Scarlet Knights will the fly to South Padre Island, TX to meet Kent State on Nov. 25 at 2 p.m. and will play another game in the tournamenet on Nov. 26. That game will be against one of the four following teams: Illinois, Texas Pan-American, Texas Southern or Wichita State.

RUTGERS WINS SOUTH PADRE ISLAND INVITATIONAL OPENER
With its 66-46 win over Austin Peay, Rutgers claims an opening-round victory in the 2005 South Padre Island Invitational. The Scarlet Knights will host Delaware State in the second round on Tuesday, Nov. 22 before heading to South Padre Island, TX for a match-up against Kent State on Nov. 25 and an additional opponent to be determined on Nov. 26.
RUTGERS IN HOME OPENER UNDER WATERS
Rutgers is 4-1 in season openers and a perfect in 5-0 in home openers under head coach Gary Waters, winning by an average of 11.8 points. The Scarlet Knights have a 77-17 all-time record in home openers.
WEBB CAREER HIGH IN THREES
Junior guard Marquis Webb established a career-high in three pointers made, connecting on 4-of-7 shots from behind the arc. His previous career high was three. Webb went on to score 17 points, his highest scoring output since a career-high 19 point performance against Virginia Tech on March 10, 2004.
ADRIAN HILL RETURNS
Junior forward Adrian Hill saw his first game action since the NIT Championship game against Michigan on April 4, 2004. He entered the game at the 13:04 minute mark of the first half, playing a total of 13 minutes with two points and three rebounds. He sat out last season with a knee injury.
FRESHMEN MAKE CONTRIBUTIONS
The Scarlet Knights’ four member recruiting class – Anthony Farmer, JR Inman, Jarron Griffin and Zack Gibson – combined to contribute 14 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists in 72 minutes of action. Additionally, Farmer and Inman earned a starting nod in their collegiate debuts. Farmer chipped in with a game-high six assists while Inman added two blocks.
DOUBY MOVES CLOSER TO 1,000 POINTS
Junior Quincy Douby scored 19 points on 5-of-11 shooting from three-point range, as he moved closer to the 1,000-point plateau. Douby currently has 870 career points in 63 games, good for an average of 13.8 points per game.
