PISCATAWAY, NJ - Despite a game-high 29 points from BIG EAST leading scorer Quincy Douby, the Rutgers men's basketball team (9-3) suffered its first home loss of the season, falling to Charlotte, 85-82, before 5,221 at the RAC on Thursday night.
De'Angelo Alexander scored 20 points and Curtis Withers had 19 as Charlotte held off a furious second half rally by Rutgers, who took a one-point lead, 76-75, with 2:13 to play, but could not overcome Leemire Goldwire, who hit six-of-six free throws in the final 32 seconds of regulation. Goldwire finished with 15 points as Charlotte (6-5) snapped a two-game losing streak.
After playing to a 40-40 tie through the first half, there were 11 lead changes in the second half before Charlotte took the lead for good when Curtis Withers converted a three-point play to make it 79-76 with 1:04 left.
He finished with 19 points and eight rebounds. De'Angelo Alexander led the 49ers with 20 points.
Trailing by three with six seconds left, Rutgers called timeout and got the ball to Anthony Farmer, who drove to the basket and then kicked the ball back to Douby, but his off-balance shot fell short and came after time had expired. Farmer added 14 points for Rutgers, while Marquis Webb had 12 and J.R. Inman and Adrian Hill chipped in with 10 each. Farmer also played a solid floor game, handing out three assists with hitting six of the eight shots he took.
Plagued by foul trouble, the Scarlet Knights' frontline of Hill and Bryon Joynes played just a combined 37 minutes as both players fouled out. Hill played well in his 20 minutes of action, finishing six-of-six from the foul line and dunking a putback off a missed shot from Jimmie Inglis that gave RU a 70-68 lead with 6:26 to play.
Douby scored 20 or more points for the 11th time in 12 games, hitting
eight-of-18 shots from the floor and four-of-10 from three point range. He also had seven rebounds and three assists.
