PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Sophomore guard Quincy Douby hit a free throw with no time left on the clock after a foul call on the last shot of overtime to give Rutgers a pulsating 62-61 victory over Seton Hall on Tuesday night, snapping the Scarlet Knights' five-game losing streak.
Douby took an inbounds pass with 4.1 seconds to play and the score tied, dribbled a couple of times, stopped and faked Seton Hall guard Donald Copeland off his feet. Copeland leaned back to avoid any major contact as Douby leaned in and shot. However, a foul was called a foul on Copeland.
The referees went to the scorer's table to review the play to make sure Douby had released the shot before the horn and that it was a two-point foul and not the three-point foul. Once the officials confirmed the two-point shot beat the buzzer, Douby got two free throws with :00 left on the game clock to the groans from the partisan, boisterous RU crowd of 7,576 fans. After missing the first shot, Douby then swished the second to win the game.
The exciting intra-state rivalry game featured 12 lead changes and four ties. Seton Hall out-scored Rutgers 28-22 in the paint, while the Scarlet Knights scored 16 points off turnovers while Seton Hall had eight points off turnovers.
Douby, who did not start the game in a lineup change, finished with 19 points on 7-of-13 shooting and a career-high four steals. Senior guard Juel Wiggan, who gained his second start of the season, added 11 points for Rutgers (8-12, 2-8 Big East). Freshman forward Ollie Bailey had eight points and seven rebounds while sophomore center Byron Joynes had an active night with seven points, five rebounds and a productive defensive night in a career-high 38-minute effort.
Senior guard John Allen had 20 points and junior center Kelly Whitney added 13 for Seton Hall (10-10, 2-7) but was harassed into committing nine turnovers. The loss was the Pirates' third straight.
Freshman guard Manny Quezada gained the first start of his career and sparked the Knights early, scoring five first half points.
