Pondexter Named AP All-American

PISCATAWAY, NJ – Rutgers’ Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL) has been named an honorable-mention selection to the Associated Press All-America Team, earning her third All-America certificate from the group.
A 5-9 senior guard, Pondexter is a candidate for three national player-of-the-year awards (Naismith, State Farm Wade Trophy, Wooden Women’s Award) as well as the Nancy Lieberman Award (top point guard) and Bayer Advantage Senior CLASS Award. She also was named to the 2004-2005 Kodak/Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) All-Region 1 Team, the BIG EAST All-First Team and BIG EAST All-Tournament Team. She is averaging 13.9 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game this season, posting 17 double-digit scoring efforts (five 20+ points) in 25 appearances this season, and currently ranks second in NCAA Tournament scoring (23.5 ppg).
Last winter, she was named to the Associated Press and Full Court Press All-America Third Teams, and was an honorable mention Kodak All-American. A finalist for all three major national player-of-the-year awards (Naismith, State Farm Wade Trophy, Wooden Women’s Award), as well as the Nancy Lieberman Award, she earned her second first-team all-BIG EAST certificate in 2004. She was an honorable-mention All-America pick by the Associated Press in 2003.
No. 9/10 Rutgers (27-6, 14-2 BIG EAST), the BIG EAST regular-season champion and BIG EAST Tournament runner-up, will face No. 8/7 Ohio State (30-4, 14-2 Big Ten) in the NCAA Tournament Philadelphia Regional semifinals Sunday, March 27, at Temple’s Liacouras Center. The game, which will tipoff at approximately 2:30 p.m., will be shown on ESPN and will be carried live on WCTC 1450 AM and WRSU 88.7 FM. A live stream of the radio broadcast will be available via www.scarletknights.com. Rutgers is the three seed in the region, while the Buckeyes are the two seed.
