Rutgers Softball Drops Doubleheader to Hofstra
Mar 30 | Softball
PISCATAWAY, NJ – The Rutgers University softball team (0-20) fell in its doubleheader against defending Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) champions Hofstra (18-10) on Wednesday, March 30, at the RU Softball Complex. The Scarlet Knights lost games one and two by a score of 12-0 and 11-2, respectively.
In game one, the Pride got out to an early lead behind sophomore Ashley Lane, who went 2-for-4 with two homeruns and three RBI. Hofstra scored five runs in the seventh inning to put the game out of reach for RU. Seniors Lindsay Creaney (Atco, NJ) and Alicia Piniat (Scotch Plains, NJ) combined to pitch seven innings, allowing nine earned runs on 12 hits in the first game.
Piniat got the start for the Scarlet Knights in game two, as Rutgers was able to put two runs on the board in the fourth inning, but it was not enough to stop the surging Pride. With the score at 5-0 to start the fourth, sophomore Maggie Geraldi (Russell, IL) got things going for RU with a single through the left side, while freshman Christine Royland (Westwood, NJ) was hit by a pitch to reach first base. Freshman Mallory Miller (Anaheim, CA) drove in the team’s first score with a single up the middle and freshman Lauren Tardiff (Manchester, NJ) cut the score to 5-2 with a single.
The Scarlet Knights return to action on Saturday, April 2, as they open the BIG EAST regular season with a doubleheader against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at 12:00 p.m. at the Rutgers Softball Complex.
