Rutgers Names Bowman Assistant AD/Football

PISCATAWAY, NJ – Max Bowman, who has a broad range of experience as a coach and administrator on both the college and professional levels, has been named Assistant Athletic Director/Football, it was announced today by Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano.
During his over 35-years career in athletics, Bowman has held the posts of athletic director, head coach, and recruiting coordinator, and also served as assistant to the head coach of the NFL’s Buffalo Bills. He has been a successful businessman and corporate manager as well.
“I am thrilled to have Max joining us at Rutgers,” said Schiano. “His coaching and administrative experience at every level will be a huge positive.”
Bowman was the assistant to the head coach and tight ends coach of the Buffalo Bills (1998-2002), serving under head coach Wade Phillips. He was responsible for a number of areas, including scheduling, travel, and game day operations, in addition to his coaching duties.
Prior to his tenure with the Buffalo Bills, Bowman was assistant head coach/assistant athletic director at the University at Buffalo (1995-98). In addition to coaching the tight ends and offensive tackles, he also fulfilled a variety of administrative responsibilities, including recruiting, compliance, academic performance and serving as a liaison with admissions, financial aid, residential life and alumni departments. Bowman began his stint at Buffalo in 1994 as associate head coach, and helped the Bulls make the transition from Division III to Division I-AA football.
Bowman was head coach at Greenville College (IL) from 1986-94, where he initiated the first football program in the 100-year history of the institution. In seven seasons, Greenville compiled a 49-15-1 record. He guided the 1993 team to an 8-2 record and a No. 16 ranking in the final NAIA Division II poll. Bowman was a four-time District 20 Coach of the Year, and was a nominee for NAIA Division II National Coach of the Year in 1990 and 1993.
Prior to his stint at Greenville, Bowman was the assistant head coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of Texas-El Paso from 1982-86. Bowman helped bring in a number of outstanding student-athletes while with the Miners, including future NFL All-Pros Seth Joyner, Chris Jacke and Tony Tolbert.
Bowman also served as assistant head coach and offensive coordinator at Kent State (1981), assistant head coach and offensive coordinator of the West Virginia Rockets of the American Football League (1981), assistant coach at Boston College (1980-81), head coach and director of athletics at Lees McRae College (1979-80) and head coach and director of athletics at Westchester Community College (1972-79). He began his career in coaching at Nyack High School and Monroe Woodbury High, both in New York, in 1969.
