Rutgers Softball Falls to BIG EAST Rival Seton Hall
Apr 17 | Softball
PISCATAWAY, NJ – The Rutgers University softball team (3-33, 1-9 BIG EAST) dropped both games of its BIG EAST doubleheader against Seton Hall (24-11, 10-2 BIG EAST) on Sunday, April 17, at the RU Softball Complex. The Scarlet Knights fell in game one by a score of 7-4 and game two 11-3.
The Scarlet Knights struck first with two runs in the first inning of game one. Kristin Madoch (Glenview, IL) led off with a comebacker, followed by a seeing-eye single through the left side from Stephanie Johannsen (Penn Valley, CA). Two batters later, Jenny Card (Miami, FL) plated Madoch with a fielder’s choice, and Johannsen later scored thanks to a Lauren Tardiff (Manchester, NJ) soft single into shallow center field.
RU added two more runs in the second. Senior Marisa Orsogna (Edison, NJ) drew a leadoff walk, followed by Yah Yah Rodriguez (Paterson, NJ) being hit by a pitch on a bunt attempt. Madoch’s sacrifice moved the runners up a base, and Johannsen grounded into a fielder’s choice that resulted in Orsogna being thrown out at home. The Pirates then attempted to catch Rodriguez in a run-down between third and home, but Seton Hall pitcher Jessica Jones dropped the ball while covering home plate, and Rodriguez was able to score. Johannsen moved to third on the play, and later scored on a passed ball.
Seton Hall took its first lead of the game with five runs in the third inning, highlighted by a three-run, two-out double to center field by Emalee Heim. The Pirates added single insurance runs in both the fifth and sixth innings.
Junior Christina Gillman (Valencia, CA) suffered the loss (0-10), allowing six hits and six runs (five earned) in five innings. Senior Lindsay Creaney (Atco, NJ) threw the final two innings, allowing one run on three hits. Jones allowed four runs (two earned) in two innings for Seton Hall, followed by three innings of five-hit ball from Maura Lund (4-3). Megan Meyer picked up her second save of the season, striking out four in the final two innings.
Rutgers opened game two with an early 1-0 lead, as Tardiff drove in senior Helen Smith (Tucson, AZ) with an RBI single to left-field. The Pirates bounced back, scoring three runs in the third inning to make the score 3-1 in Seton Hall’s favor.
Facing a two-run deficit with a runner on third, Smith sent a shot to straight-away center, her fourth homerun of the season, knotting the score at 3-3.
Junior Jessica Crosby (Sedro-Woolley) was credited with the loss (2-6), going 4.1 innings, giving up 11 hits and six earned runs. Senior Alicia Piniat (Scotch-Plains, NJ) pitched 0.2 innings in relief for Rutgers. Jones picked up the win (3-4), allowing two hits in one inning of work.
The Scarlet Knights, playing their final weekend doubleheader of the season, honored seniors Card, Creaney, Johannsen, Orsogna, Piniat and Smith before the first game.
Rutgers will return to the field Wednesday, April 20, to host Monmouth at 3:00 p.m. at the Rutgers Softball Complex.
