Barnes, Medley, Pittman Earn Spring Football Awards

PISCATAWAY, NJ -- Senior cornerback Corey Barnes (Miami, FL), senior fullback Ishmael Medley (Elizabeth, NJ) and senior running back Clarence Pittman (Miami, FL) have been named recipients of annual awards for their efforts during the Rutgers University football team's Spring Practice 2005.
The award winners were selected by the Rutgers football coaching staff, and were honored today in a halftime ceremony at the annual Scarlet-White Game at Rutgers Stadium.
Barnes earned the Douglas A. Smith Second Effort Award, given to the defensive player "who through determination, dedication and hard work has shown the most improvement off-season and the Spring Practice." Barnes made the move from wide receiver to cornerback during last season. Also a contributor on special teams, the 5-8, 170-pound graduate of Carol City High School registered three tackles and blocked a punt in nine games in 2004.
Medley earned the Mark Mills Second Effort Award, given to the offensive player "who has shown the most improvement during the off-season and the Spring Practice." The 5-11, 230-pound Medley, a graduate of Elizabeth High School and the Hun School, appeared in 10 games in 2004, and caught four passes for 27 yards.
Pittman was named the recipient of the Frank R. Burns Award, given to the player who has "demonstrated extraordinary mental and physical toughness" during Spring Practice. The 5-10, 208-pound Pittman, a graduate of Northwestern High School, played in all 11 games in 2004, and gained 48 yards on 15 carries.
