PISCATAWAY, NJ – Aided by four straight set singles victories, the Rutgers women’s tennis team (8-9) won for the third time in four matches, knocking off visiting Lafayette 5-0 on Thursday at the RU Tennis Complex in Piscataway.
Freshman Katrina Elder-Bush got the Scarlet Knights started with a 6-1, 6-3 win at first singles, followed by a 6-2, 6-3 triumph from fellow freshman Anela Dujsic (Mississauga, Ontario) at second singles. Junior Alina Balasa (East Brunswick, NJ) and Helen Magomedova (Brooklyn, NY) followed with convincing wins to sweep the singles matches.
In the only doubles match that was played, sophomore Lauren Edelschein (Medford Lakes, NJ) and junior Ketevan Shmakova (Dover, NJ) cruised past Katie Ritter and Julie Harabedian 6-2, 6-2.
“We seem to be playing our best tennis of the season heading into the most critical stretch of our schedule,” said head coach Ben Bucca. “As we’re healing and getting healthy again, our level of play is rising. It couldn’t come at a better time, because we will be tested by our BIG EAST opponents in the coming weeks.”
Rutgers returns to action on Saturday, April 9, when it travels to Villanova for a key BIG EAST match.
