Rutgers Wins 2-1 in Penalty Stroke-Off Against Lafayette
Sep 11 | Field Hockey
PISCATAWAY, NJ - Freshman midfielder Amy Lewis (Hainesport, NJ) scored a goal in the 45th minute of regulation and the first goal of the penalty stroke-off to help the Scarlet Knights field hockey team defeat Lafayette on Sunday, 2-1, at the RU Stadium Complex.
The game opened and while Rutgers seemed to be in control for most of the first half, both teams struggled to find their respective offensive games, heading into the half knotted at 0-0.
Scoring picked up early in the second half as the Scarlet Knights struck first off of a penalty corner. Sophomore midfielder Corrine Bach (Moorestone, NJ) served as the stopper off of a corner from fellow sophomore midfielder Jocelyn Mattina (Bethlehem, PA). Bach then served the pass to Lewis, who found the back of the net with a rocket from the left side of the circle for her first goal of the season.
The Leopards fought back and in the 57th minute, junior forward Maggie DeFilippo scored off of a pass from senior midfielder Amanda Eggleston to tie the game at 1-1.
The score would stay tied at 1-1 throughout the remainder of regulation and even throughout two 15-minute overtime periods thanks to a plethora of saves by Lafayette goalie Jill Lambert. After registering only three shots in the first half, the Scarlet Knights tallied 12 in the second half and both overtime sessions compared to only six in that time frame for the Leopards. While Lafayette edged RU in penalty corners, 12-10, the game would ultimately be decided in a penalty stroke-off.
The Scarlet Knights sent out Lewis to take the first stroke and she found the top left corner of the net to stake RU to a 1-0 advantage. Senior Kasey Gallagher was sent out by Lafayette coach Ann Gold to take the first stroke for the Leopards; however, Gallagher was denied by RU sophomore goalie Rosalyn Wentko (Dallas, PA) on a diving stop to her right.
Sophomore Catherine Badolato (Berlin, NJ) was denied by Lambert on the second RU stroke and sophomore Katie Morad (Marlton, NJ) followed her by missing wide left. Sophomore Laura Fabian's stroke was saved by Wentko, as was DeFilippo's, who was denied her second goal of the afternoon.
Sophomore Jessica Roos (Mickleton, NJ) shot next for the Scarlet Knights but hit the cross bar as she tried to beat Lambert with a high shot. Junior Chrissy Falivene missed the following Lafayette shot, which turned out to be a crucial miss for the Leopards as RU senior tri-captain Kara Spector (Easton, MD) scored the game-winning goal on the fifth and final stroke for the Scarlet Knights.
With the win, the Scarlet Knights improve to 4-2 on the season. Lafayette suffered its first loss of the season, falling to 2-1.
The Scarlet Knights will be in action again on Friday Sept. 16, at 7:00 p.m. when they travel to Syracuse to take on the Orange in what will be their first BIG EAST contest. The Orange is currently 2-3 on the season.
