Men's Soccer Drops 3-0 Decision to West Virginia

PISCATAWAY, NJ - West Virginia's Jarrod Smith scored 10 minutes into the first half and gave visiting Mountaineers (4-2, 1-0 BIG EAST) the early momentum in a 3-0 win over Rutgers (1-4, 0-1 BIG EAST) in men's soccer action on Friday night before 2,094 at Yurcak Field.
Smith scored on a corner kick slipped across the goal line and past RU's Matt Van Oekel (Chesapeake, VA). West Virginia's 1-0 lead stood into the second half, until Andy Wright finished off a cross from Matt Anstey on a corner kick to give WVU an all-important two-goal cushion in the 56th minute.
After managing just two shots in the first half against a stingy West Virginia defense, Rutgers began to generate more offense in the second half, getting a total of six shots off. WVU goalie Matt Noble's only save came with under 20 minutes to play in regulation when he denied Oliver Peterson (Arkley, United Kingdom) on a header.
Dan Stratford closed out the scoring in the 73rd minute when he scored from 40 yards out on a free kick. West Virginia's win was just its second-ever over Rutgers, and the first at Yurcak Field. The Scarlet Knights are now 6-2-2 all-time in BIG EAST openers since joining the league in 1995.
'This was one of the most bizarre games I've coached in ever at Rutgers,' said head coach Bob Reasso. 'We came out playing tight and nervous from the beginning, and then we made a mistake in goal and all of a sudden it's 1-0. It seems like the ball hasn't bounced out way yet this year. This is a very young team, especially in the attacking third, and we're making to many mistakes. We can't lose heart, though, we've got 13 games left to get this turned around and pointed in the right direction.'
Rutgers held an 8-6 advantage is shots, and VanOekel made one save. Rutgers had six corner kicks and a total of four yellow cards were issued (three on Rutgers, one on West Virginia.
The Scarlet Knights return to action on Sunday, September 18, when they host BIG EAST rival Pittsburgh at noon. The game can be seen live on the Comcast Network (CN8).
