Sep 17 | Women's Volleyball
NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ - The Rutgers University volleyball team (4-8) split a pair of matches on the second day of competition at the Embassy Suites Classic on Saturday, Sept. 17, at the College Avenue Gymnasium. The Scarlet Knights topped UMBC by a score of 3-0 (30-19, 30-18, 30-25), but dropped a 3-1 (14-30, 30-28, 19-30, 15-30) decision to Fairfield in the day's final match.
In RU's match against UMBC (4-8), freshman Kyra Thompson (Tucson, AZ) and senior Courtney Stout (San Marcos, CA) led the way with Thompson recording a team-high 13 kills and 11 digs for her third double-double of the season. Stout picked up her fifth double-double, adding 11 kills and a team-leading 12 digs. Also putting forth a solid offensive effort was sophomore Amanda Meyer (Naperville, IL), who chipped in nine kills.
On defense, senior Ashleigh Young (Albany, OR) and freshman Claudia Neba (Aurora, CO) each posted a pair of block-assists to lead RU.
Thompson, Stout and Meyer led the Scarlet Knights in their second match of the day against Fairfield, as they each contributed eight kills. Young and Neba rounded out the offensive effort with seven kills apiece. Freshman Roxy Calder (Oceanside, CA) notched a match-high 37 assists and tied junior Jocelyn Greenwald (Old Tappan, NJ) for the team high with seven digs.
In the first match of the day, Temple (6-7) defeated Fairfield (7-6) by a score of 3-0 (30-27, 30-25, 30-27). The Owls were led by Zhen Jia Liu with a match-high 18 kills and Colleen Egan, who added 10 kills. Ying Sun Ling had a team-high 16 digs, followed by Liu with 11.
The Owls later topped UMBC 3-1 (23-30, 30-27, 30-12, 30-27) in the third match of day two. Temple battle back from an early 1-0 deficit, due in large part to the play of Egan and Christina DeMarco. Egan and DeMarco each tallied a match-high 16 kills to help power Temple's offense.
Egan and DeMarco also put forth a strong effort as the Owls out blocked the Retrievers 13-6. Egan led with seven blocks (two solo, five assist), followed by DeMarco with six (four solo, two assist).
The Scarlet Knights will return to action for the conclusion of the Rutgers Embassy Suites Classic on Sunday, Sept. 18 at the College Avenue Gymnasium. The first match will feature Temple and Harvard at 10:00 a.m., followed by the final match of the tournament between Rutgers and Harvard at 1:00 p.m.
