Rutgers Drops Albany in Overtime at Saratoga

SARATOGA, NY - Freshman forward Karen Brewster (Chico, CA) scored an unassisted game-winning goal in overtime for the Rutgers University field hockey team, as it downed Albany, 2-1, on Sunday in Saratoga, NY.
The Scarlet Knights and the Great Danes played a scoreless opening 20 minutes; however, in the 21st minutes of the first half, RU got on the board. Senior tri-captain Kara Spector (Easton, MD) converted off of a penalty corner pass from sophomore Jocelyn Mattina (Bethlehem, PA) and freshman Amy Lewis (Hainesport, NJ) to give RU the 1-0 lead. Spector's goal was her second of the season and the assist gave Lewis a team-leading eight points on the year (3 g, 2 a).
Rutgers held the lead for the remainder of the first half but relinquished it in the 39th minute of the second half. Great Dane Tina Bryson tied the game at 1-1 with her fourth goal of the season off of passes from Vanessa Walter and Michele Polizois.
The Bryson goal would prove to be the last of the day for Albany and in the 82nd minute of overtime, Brewster scored her first goal of the season, giving the Scarlet Knights the 2-1 victory. Brewster's game-winner was the first collegiate goal of her career and it gave the Scarlet Knights a much needed win after a tough loss at Syracuse on Friday evening.
Spector was tops on the team with three shots on the afternoon and Mattina's assist gave her five on the season, good for the team lead. Sophomore goalie Rosalyn Wentko (Dallas, PA) played the entire game for RU and wound up with six saves, including two crucial ones in the deciding overtime period.
The Scarlet Knights were edged by the Great Danes in shot attempts (21-13), but had 10 penalty corners compared to just nine by Albany.
With the win, the Scarlet Knights improved to 5-3 on the season, including 0-1 in the BIG EAST. The loss drops Albany to an even 4-4 on the year.
The Scarlet Knights will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 23, against BIG EAST rival Villanova at 7:30 p.m. at the RU Stadium Complex. The match will be the Scarlet Knights' second against a BIG EAST opponent.
