Rutgers Drops 2-1 Decision to No. 18 Seton Hall
Sep 23 | Men's Soccer
SOUTH ORANGE, NJ – No. 18 Seton Hall Pirates (5-1-1, 1-1-1 BIG EAST) scored twice in a five minute span at the end of regulation to upend Rutgers (2-5-0, 1-2-0 BIG EAST) 2-1 in men’s soccer action on Friday afternoon at Owen Carroll Field in South Orange, NJ. Sophomore Chris Moore (New Castle, England) scored in the 59th minute for the Scarlet Knights.
Eliseo Giusfredi netted the game-winning for Seton Hall, as he finished off a pass from Sacha Kljestan eight yards out in front of the goal at the 2:26 mark. It spoiled an otherwise sparkling performance from RU goalie Lubos Ancin (Burlington, NJ), who finished with seven saves.
Seton Hall tied the game with 5:04 to play in the second half as Sacha Kljestan gathered a rebound and left the ball for Christian Vercollone, whose shot from 10 yards out went past a diving Ancin to the right corner of the goal.
Moore’s shot came from 25 yards out when Nick LaBrocca (Howell, NJ) taped the ball to Moore of a free kick and he sent a ball to the upper right corner of the goal, sailing over the hand of preseason BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year Boris Pardo. It was the second time in as many games that Moore netted a goal for RU, and he also scored in the second half of a 4-1 win over Pittsburgh on Sunday.
“Our kids played very hard,” said head coach Bob Reasso. “We were right there and deserved to win, but give credit to Seton Hall for making the plays at the end. I’m disappointed with the result, but certainly not with the effort.”
Ancin snuffed out Seton Hall’s best scoring chance of the first half when he made a save on a shot from 15 yards out at the top of the box by the Pirates’ John Raus. The Scarlet Knight defense, led by Ancin, Jake Martenson (Winchester, VA), Abdul Kargbo (Alexandria, VA) and Alieu Terry (Silver Spring, MD) held the high-powered Pirates to just four shots.
Seton Hall appeared to take a 1-0 lead in the opening stage of the second half, but an offsides call nullified a goal by Teddy Niziolek.
Ancin denied Raus twice with 37 minutes remaining in the second half, first on a breakaway point-blank shot attempt and again on the rebound. The scoring opportunity was ended when Ancin came out of the goal to cut off a cross attempt following a direct kick.
Chad Salyer (Trophy Club, TX) snuck in behind the Seton Hall defense in the 56th minute and appeared to have a golden opportunity to score his first career goal, but Pardo made a diving save.
Rutgers returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 25, when it travels to Washington, DC, to face BIG EAST foe Georgetown at 3:00 p.m.
