No. 21 West Virginia Bests Rutgers, 1-0
Sep 30 | Women's Soccer
MORGANTOWN, WV – A penalty kick in the 55th minute was the difference as No. 21 West Virginia (5-3-3, 2-1-1 BIG EAST) defeated visiting Rutgers (3-7-1, 0-4 BIG EAST) 1-0 in a BIG EAST Conference cross-divisional match Sept. 30.
As Marisa Kanela pursued a deflection of Cathy Abel’s corner kick less than 10 minutes into the second half, Rutgers was whistled for a foul in the box. Kanela converted the penalty kick opportunity, the first one allowed by the Scarlet Knights this season, to break the scoreless tie.
Senior Zoe Avner (Paris, France) had Rutgers’ best chance of the match on a free kick in the 70th minute, zipping the ball to the center of the goal, but WVU keeper Lana Bannerman was able to punch the ball over the crossbar and out of harm’s way. Junior Domenique Esposito (Rivervale, NJ) had another dangerous chance just minutes later, but Bannerman was able to hold on to Esposito’s close-range shot.
Redshirt junior Nora Crawford (McLean, VA) made six saves for the Scarlet Knights in goal (3-7-1).
RU will finish its weekend road swing Sunday, Oct. 2, against Pittsburgh at 1:00 p.m.
