Rutgers Downed in OT by No. 3 Villanova 84-78

PISCATAWAY, NJ - Junior guard Quincy Douby, the BIG EAST's leading scorer, continued his offensive exploits, scoring 28 points on 11-of-19 shooting, but No. 3 Villanova survived a nip-and-tuck contest on Wednesday night at the RAC, posting an 84-78 victory over the Scarlet Knights.

Rutgers (11-4, 1-1 BIG EAST) trailed 70-67 with 19 seconds left in regulation after two free throws by Villanova senior guard Allan Ray. But senior center Jimmie Inglis, who hadn't attempted a three-pointer in his in his Rutgers career, banked one in off the glass with 2.5 seconds left to send the game into overtime.

Villanova senior guard Randy Foye had given Villanova a 68-64 lead with 3:51 to go, but Scarlet Knight junior swingman Marquis Webb pulled Rutgers within a one with a three-pointer with 2:09 left. After Rutgers forced a jump ball and gained possession, Douby and Webb both missed jumpers before Ray made his free throws.

Villanova trailed from the final minutes of the first half until sophomore guard Kyle Lowry, who finished with 28 points, converted a three-point play with 8:28 left to give the Wildcats a 58-57 lead. They extended it to 63-57 on two free throws by Lowry before Rutgers clawed back on baskets by freshman forward JR Inman, Inglis and Douby, who picked up a loose ball and scored on a layup to tie the game at 64.

Foye scored 14 of Villanova's first 25 points on a variety of drives and long-range jumpers. The Wildcats led by 10 points after he made two of three free throws with 10:01 left in the half, but Rutgers responded by taking advantage of its size and began scoring well in the lane. Freshman swingman Jaron Griffin, Inman and junior forward Adrian Hill combined to score 11 points in one stretch, with Hill rebounding three of his own misses in one sequence before getting fouled and converting both free throws.

Douby then found his stroke. The junior guard scored on two drives to tie the game at 29-29, then gave Rutgers its first lead with a hree-pointer. The Scarlet Knights finished the half with their largest lead (43-38) when Inman made two free throws with 3 seconds left.

Inman and Webb each finished with 11 points (along with seven rebounds and seven assists), and Inglis, aided by his three-pointer, had seven points in 14 minutes off the bench.  Hill had a productive 26 minutes of action, netting eight points and grabbing five rebounds.  Lowry was complimented by Foye's 24 points and Ray's 17 tallies.  Rutgers out-rebounded Villanova, 35-31, marking the ninth time in 15 games it has won the battle on the boards.  The Wildcats attempted 36 free throws, including 13 in the overtime period.

Rutgers returns to action on Sunday, Jan. 15, when it travels to Chicago, IL, to face DePaul.  It will be the Scarlet Knights' first road game in over a month.
