PISCATAWAY, NJ - Rutgers sophomore Essence Carson (Paterson, NJ) has contributed an entry to the NCAA Double-A Zone Website blog, which highlights women's academic and athletic successes. The site may be accessed at http://www.doubleazone.com/.
The NCAA is not only commemorating its centennial anniversary this year, but the Association is also celebrating the 25th anniversary of women's championships. Throughout the year, the NCAA's new blog - the Double-A Zone - will offer special features from prominent female student-athletes, as well as guest blogs from women's basketball student-athletes hoping to make it the Final Four in Boston.
In addition to its exciting content celebrating women's sports, the Double-A Zone features an inside look at NCAA issues and all things student-athlete. The blog is run by Josh Centor, a former Division III baseball student-athlete who worked at Boston College last year. On the blog, Josh draws on his experiences and youth to create a forum where all issues that affect current and future student-athletes can be discussed openly.
The blog is an interactive discussion with a diverse group of participants. Everyone has an opinion about intercollegiate athletics, and those voices can be heard on the Double-A Zone.
A starter in all 16 games this season for Rutgers, Carson ranks second on the team in minutes (32.9 per game), chipping in 7.6 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.4 assists per contest. For her career, Carson has started 39 of 51 games and has averaged 6.9 points and 5.2 rebounds per contest, posting 13 double-digit scoring games, three double-digit rebounding games and one double-double.
Away from the court, she was a straight-A student at the Rosa Parks School for the Fine and Performing Arts, and competed athletically at Eastside High School. A gifted musician, she plays the piano, bass guitar, drums and saxophone, and is majoring in music at Rutgers.
