Gymnastics Tops Southern Connecticut, Brockport

PISCATAWAY, NJ - The Rutgers gymnastics team (5-1, 1-1 EAGL) scored 190.425 points to defeat Southern Connecticut State (180.400) and SUNY-Brockport (177.950) on Saturday, Jan. 28, at the Livingston Recreation Center.
The Scarlet Knights won all four events and placed in the top-three in each with Freshman Latara Northcutt (Snellville, NJ) leading the way with a pair of first-place finishes. Northcutt won both the vault and uneven bars, scoring a 9.600 and 9.675, respectively.
Taking second in the vault was senior Erin Lynch (Mullica Hill, NJ), who scored a 9.575, while senior Jamye Shelton (Griffin, GA) and junior Lorena Johnson (Lilburn, GA) tied for third place with a 9.525.
Johnson also scored a 9.600 to finish second on the bars, followed by freshman Jessica Haddaway (Baltimore, MD), who placed third with a 9.575.
Senior Gina Roselle (Tinton Falls, NJ) had an outstanding performance on the balance beam, as she led the team with a first-place finish, scoring a 9.725. Johnson followed with another second-place showing (9.525), while sophomore Tiffany Schramm (Orange County, CA) took third with a 9.475.
Junior Casey Santangelo (Cherry Hill, NJ) posted the best individual effort of the afternoon, as she won the floor exercise with a season-high 9.750. Senior Lauren Sisler (Newport, VA) and junior Beth Fittery (Denver, PA) recorded equally-impressive performances with both tying for second place with a 9.675.
Johnson won the all-around competition with a combined score of 38.225, followed by Fittery in second (38.000) and Southern Connecticut’s Erika Pysh in third with a 36.950.
Pysh and teammate Kelly Todd tied for fourth on the floor and beam, respectively. Pysh scored a 9.575, while Todd recorded a 9.350.
Brockport was led Sarah Bulka, who finished fourth in the all-around (36.900), tied for fifth on vault (9.500) and placed sixth on the bars with a 9.425.
The Scarlet Knights will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 4, when they take on EAGL member Pittsburgh on the road at 7:00 p.m.
