Rutgers Defeats Syracuse in Double OT, 1-0
Oct 14 | Women's Soccer
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - A goal from Jenifer Anzivino (Middletown, N.J.) with 8:23 remaining in the second overtime lifted the Rutgers women's soccer team (12-2-1, 6-1-1 BIG EAST) to a 1-0 BIG EAST victory over Syracuse (2-11-3, 1-6-1 BIG EAST) on Friday night.
The shutout is the Scarlet Knights' 10th of the season, the first time since the 1996 campaign that Rutgers has posted 10 shutout wins. Rutgers' sixth BIG EAST win also marks the first time since 1996 that the team has posted six conference wins.
"The second half was better than the first," said head coach Glenn Crooks. "I thought that unit we had in the second half that started, they were working the game in a way where you felt we were going to put one in."
Rutgers was able to generate a number of offensive opportunities, but was unable to capitalize upon them before the goal from Anzivino. Gina DeMaio (Parsippany, N.J.) got the ball at the top of the box and passed it into Anzivino who nailed it into the middle of the goal from right in front of the goal.
In the first half, Syracuse got two quick corner kicks, but Rutgers was able to limit the opportunities, not allowing a shot. At the 43:48 mark, Guthrie deflected the first corner kick over the goal. Immediately following the first cross, the Orange again had the ball in the box, but Alicia Hall (Port Republic, N.J.) headed it out, preventing the scoring opportunity.
In the 15th minute, Erin Guthrie (Sparta, N.J.) shut down a Syracuse scoring threat, snagging a cross from the left side of the field off the foot of the Orange's Molly McManus.
Rutgers got its first corner at the 22:41 mark, but Syracuse's Danielle Jordan headed it out. A few seconds later, the Scarlet Knights got a good look at the goal when Anzivinonailed a header towards the goal, but the Orange's Eliza Bennett-Hattan came up with the save.
Kristie Lang (East Brunswick, N.J.) came up with a header at the 19:48 mark, but Bennett-Hattan came up with another save. With 17 minutes remaining in the first half, Hall headed a cross from Jaime Komar (Matawan, N.J.) towards the goal, but Bennett-Hattan made another save for the Orange to end the scoring threat.
With 9:14 remaining in the first half, DeMaio nailed a shot from the top of the box, missing just wide of the goal.
Syracuse's Jen Taormina took a shot with seven minutes remaining, but Komar was able to block the ball. Off a corner a few seconds later, the Orange got a shot from Lauren Jentzen, but Komar again came up with the defensive play for the Scarlet Knights, blocking the ball out of the box.
Karla Schacher (Tofield, Canada) took her first shot of the game with 1:10 remaining, nailing a shot from the top of the box on the right side of the field, but Bennett-Hatten was able to come up with the stop for the Orange.
To open the second half, Schacher took a shot from the right side of the box at the 39:53 mark, but, again, Bennett-Hattan came up with a big save for the Orange.
Syracuse had an opportunity to score in the 53rd minute of the match on a throw-in, but Kim Brandao (Rahway, N.J.) stepped up and cleared the ball. On their next possession, the Scarlet Knights got a good look at the goal when Anzivino passed the ball to DeMaio from the top of the box to the right wing. DeMaio took a shot, aiming to the right top corner of the box, but missed just high of the goal.
With 32:23 remaining, Syracuse's Amanda Arcuri nailed a shot to the left side of the goal on a breakaway, but Guthrie came up with a huge save knocking the ball out of bounds and ending the Orange's scoring opportunity.
"Give them credit, Guthrie had to make a tremendous save," Crooks said. "She showed her stuff again tonight. It was a big time save. Keepers train for those moments and she, once again, came through for us."
Tierney Brady (Brick, N.J.) came up with a big play for the Scarlet Knights with 19:06 remaining in the game. Arcuri took a shot from the top of the box and Brady remained tight on her defensively, making a block to clear the ball.
Rutgers got its best scoring opportunity in the match with 8:32 remaining when Anzivino worked her way into the box around the Syracuse defense. Bennett-Hatten came out and made the save in the bottom right corner of the goal and bobbled it. DeMaio got a foot on it, but the second attempt was blocked by the Orange.
In the last half of the second period, Rutgers dominated possession. On a free kick by DeMaio with 1:50 left, the Orange defense was able to block the ball out of bounds. DeMaio then took the corner for Rutgers, but the Scarlet Knights were unable to capitalize on the set piece as Syracuse again cleared the ball, sending the match into overtime.
Just over two minutes into the first overtime period, DeMaio had a good look at the goal. DeMaio dribbled down the right side and nailed a shot from inside the box just over the goal.
With 6:44 left, Syracuse nearly ended the game with two consecutive shots. Tessa McDougall nailed a shot from inside the box and hit the left post. Jentzen then had another scoring opportunity, but missed the shot wide.
On their next possession, the Scarlet Knights got a cross from the left side off the foot of Anzivino that went just over Kristen Edmonds (Metuchen, N.J.). Komar got the ball back and nailed it into the goal box from the right side, but DeMaio was unable to gain control of it before Bennett-Hatten snatched it up.
On an Orange breakaway, Syracuse's McDougall and Arcuri got past Brandao, but Hall came from behind and slide-tackled Arcuri, knocking the ball loose for Ashley Lunemann (Hillsborough, N.J.) to clear from the Rutgers' side.
Anzivino then ended the match with a goal from inside the box on DeMaio's assist.
In goal for the Scarlet Knights, Guthrie made one save and earned her 10th shutout. In just her freshman season, Guthrie is fourth on the all-time career shutout list.
Rutgers will play its last road game of the season at St. John's on Sunday, Oct. 15, at 1:00 p.m.
