Oct 16 | Women's Soccer
PISCATAWAY, N.J. -Rutgers women's soccer freshmen Erin Guthrie (Sparta, N.J.) and Jenifer Anzivino (Middletown, N.J.) and senior co-captain Kim Brand????o (Rahway, N.J.) all earned weekly honors for their play in the Scarlet Knights' win over Syracuse (Oct. 13) and scoreless tie with DePaul (Oct. 15).
Anzivino was named the BIG EAST Rookie of the Week, while Guthrie earned conference honor roll accolades for the second time this season. Brandao was honored by TopDrawerSoccer.com as a member of its National Team of the Week.
The conference award was the second for Anzivino as she was named to the honor roll Sept. 25. In last week's 1-0 win at Syracuse, she scored the game-winning goal in double overtime to give the Scarlet Knights their sixth conference win of the season, a first for Rutgers since the 1996 campaign. For the season, Anzivino is third on the team with five goals and two assists and has tallied three gamewinners for the Scarlet Knights.
Guthrie, who came to Rutgers ranked among the nation's top-50 recruits, has won conference accolades twice this season, including Goalkeeper of the Week honors Sept. 18. She was named to the BIG EAST honor roll on Oct. 2. In her first season with the Scarlet Knights, Guthrie has posted 11 shutouts and has a goals-against average of 0.37. She's also made 42 saves.
Brandao, who has been a starter at centerback since her freshman year, has been a key defender for the Scarlet Knights (12-2-2, 6-1-2 BIG EAST). Rutgers has limited opponents to 0.36 goal per match and 8.4 shots per contest. The Scarlet Knights' scoreless tie against St. John's on Oct. 15 gave Rutgers its 11th shutout of the season, tying a school record set in the 1991 campaign.
Due to an injury during spring training as a junior, Brandao was redshirted for the 2005 season. In the 3-0 shutout against Monmouth on Sept. 5, Brandao scored her second career goal for the Scarlet Knights. On Oct. 4, Brandao scored her second goal of the year against Princeton as the Scarlet Knights posted a 2-0 win over their in-state rivals televised live on the Fox Soccer Channel.
The Scarlet Knights will wrap up the regular season with two home games. Rutgers will welcome Cincinnati to Yurcak Field on Friday, Oct. 20, at 7:00 p.m., and the Louisville Cardinals on Sunday, Oct. 22, at 1:00 p.m.
