Guthrie Named ECAC Defensive Player of the Week

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -Rutgers women's soccer player Erin Guthrie (Sparta, N.J.) was named the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Defensive Player of the Week the conference announced yesterday.
In wins over Cincinnati (Oct. 20) and Louisville (Oct. 22), Guthrie tallied six saves. In the match against the Cardinals, Guthrie recorded four saves as Rutgers secured a quarterfinal home match in the BIG EAST tournament. In the last 30 minutes of the match, she made three critical saves, preventing the Cardinals from scoring the match-tying goal.
In the final two minutes, Louisville made two scoring attempts, the first at the 1:12 mark. The Cardinals' Monique Gjini took a shot from the top of the goal box, but Guthrie made the play, blocking the ball out of bounds. With just one second remaining, Louisville's Amy Seng got a shot off from inside the box, but Guthrie again made the save for the Scarlet Knights.
The award was the second of the week for the rookie, as she was also named the BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week.
Rutgers will host a BIG EAST quarterfinal match-up with Connecticut on Saturday, Oct. 28, at Yurcak Field. The match will proceed the Rutgers' men's soccer quarterfinal match against an opponent to be determined. The men's match is slated for 5:00 p.m.
