Rutgers Drops Season Finale to Princeton

PRINCETON, N.J. - The Rutgers field hockey team (6-12, 1-5 BIG EAST) dropped its final game of the 2006 season, 3-0 to Princeton (10-6). Amy Lewis (Hainesport, N.J.) led the team with five shots, but the Tigers managed to hold the Scarlet Knights scoreless.
Head coach Liz Tchou felt this was another game that got away from her team.
"It was another game where we had opportunities and we just couldn't capitalize," she said. "We were moving the ball well, but now we have to work hard in the spring to get ready for next season."
Lewis had five shots while teammate Caitlin Browne (Middletown, N.J.) had two. RU starting goalie Rosalyn Wentko (Dallas, Pa.) finished the game with eight saves.
The Tigers had 17 shots in the game, led by Holly McGarvie, who had four shots and one of Princeton's three goals, her eighth of the season. Sarah Reinprecht and Kristin Schwab had the other two goals for Princeton, their fourth and third of the season, respectively. The Scarlet Knights did hold the edge in penalty corners, 7-5, but failed to convert those scoring opportunities into goals.
Browne took some positives away from her team's loss to Princeton.
"Everyone came to play today," she said. "Unfortunately we just didn't step-up and we weren't able to capitalize on our opportunities. We learned a lot about ourselves this season and we left this game looking forward to what we can do next year."
Rutgers finished the season with a 6-12 record, and won the program's first BIG EAST match in two years, a 3-2 decision over Georgetown on Oct. 6. The young Scarlet Knights team, without a senior on its roster, has looked at this season a building block and Tchouhas been pleased with the progress she's seen from her team.
"We're a young team and we went through a lot of different situations and learned from every one of them, both the wins and the losses," Tchou said. "We got better throughout the season and we improved in a short amount of time and with everyone returning, we just have to work hard to get ready for next year."
