HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. - The Rutgers men's basketball team (1-3) fell behind early and could not overcome its deficit in a 101-72 loss to Bradley (5-0) in the third round of the Chicago Challenge Invitational on Friday, Nov. 24, at the Sears Centre.
Senior guard Marquis Webb (Paterson, N.J.), sophomore forward JR Inman (Pomona, N.Y.) and senior forward Adrian Hill (Canton, Ohio) each scored in double figures for the Scarlet Knights. Webb led with 16 points, while Inman chipped in 14 and Hill added 10. Inman's 14 points against the Braves marked the fourth consecutive game he has scored in double digits.
Bradley took a 34-point lead (61-27) into the locker room at halftime, due in large part to 13-of-17 shooting (76.5 percent) from behind the arc. Junior guard Jeremy Crouch, the Braves' leading scorer, had 15 of his game high 19 points in the first half on a perfect 3-of-3 from the three point line. Crouch's backcourt-mate Will Franklin also scored in double figures before the half with 11 points on 4-of-4 shooting from the floor.
"We knew they were going to present some problems," said head coach Fred Hill. "We thought they were the best team we played all year. They're super quick off the dribble and they can really shoot the basketball."
The Scarlet Knights slowed Bradley's solid shooting from behind the arc in the second half, as the Braves connected on just one of eight three point field goals (12.5 percent). Rutgers also found increased offensive production, scoring 40 of its 72 points after the break.
"What we did do, which we talked about at halftime, was come out in the second half and not give in and just play Rutgers basketball," added Hill. "We did a much better job of doing that in the second half, not giving up as many three's and rebounding better."
Bradley was led by five players in double figures, including senior center Zach Andrews, who tallied 16 points and nine rebounds, while senior guard Danny Adams provided a spark off the bench with 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the floor.
Hill tied freshman center Hamady N'Diaye (Dakar, Senegal) with a team high seven rebounds. N'Diaye also scored five points and had two blocks, while junior forward Ollie Bailey (Chicago, Ill.) came off the bench to score nine points and pull down four rebounds.
The Scarlet Knights will face Miami-Ohio in the final round of the Chicago Challenge Invitational on Saturday, Nov. 25, at 6:00 p.m. EST.
