Rutgers Edged by St. John's 54-51

PISCATAWAY, NJ - Junior guard Quincy Douby poured in a game-high 23 points, including a go-ahead three-pointer with 59 seconds left, but St. John’s scored the game’s final four points and made two clutch free throws to claim a 54-51 victory over Rutgers on Wednesday at the Louis Brown Athletic Center.

Douby hit a deep three-pointer with just under a minute left that gave Rutgers (14-11, 4-8) a 51-50 lead, but the Red Storm (11-12, 4-8) responded when Aaron Spears connected on a jumper from the right baseline, eight feet out.  The Scarlet Knights ran the clock down to six seconds on the next possession, but a jumper by Anthony Farmer went out of bounds and the Red Storm were awarded the ball.

Thanks to a stellar defensive effort, RU forced a five-second violation to take back possession, but Douby had a potential game-winning three-pointer glance off the front of the rim with four seconds left, and Lamont Hamilton made two free throws to provide the final margin.

In a classic BIG EAST defensive battle, neither team was able to gain a consistent offensive flow.  Rutgers shot 18-of-53 (.340) from the floor, but was able to hold St. John’s to just nine field goals in the second half.  The game featured six ties and 11 lead changes, as neither club led by eight points the entire way.

Spears gave SJU a 42-34 lead at the 9:14 mark of the second half, but a consecutive old fashioned three-point play by Douby cut the deficit to 42-40 one minute later.  Douby’s three-pointer with just under a minute to play in regulation was Rutgers’ first lead of the second half.

Junior swingman Marquis Webb finished with 12 points on five-of-nine shooting and played his usual brand of suffocating defense, holding Eugene Lawrence to six points.  Rutgers turned the ball over just seven times, keyed by point guard Anthony Farmer, who played 34 minutes and committed just one turnover, despite being limited by the effects of a bruised right shoulder.

The key to the victory for St. John’s was an effective low post game. Lamont Hamilton, a 6-11 forward, had 19 points and 14 rebounds while the 6-10 Spears added 10 points as the only St. John’s players to score in double figures.
