Rutgers Defeats St. John's to Clinch BIG EAST Berth

QUEENS, NY - Junior guard Quincy Douby scored 36 points, and Rutgers qualified for the Big East tournament with an 82-70 victory over St. John's on Sunday.

The Scarlet Knights (17-12, 7-9), who will be the 10th seed in the conference tournament, will face intrastate rival Seton Hall, the seventh see, in the first round of the BIG EAST Tournament.

Douby, the BIG EAST’s  leading scorer, upped his overall average to 25.1 points per game, had 24 in the second half. He hit a three-pointer and added a three-point play to ignite an 11-1 run that gave Rutgers a 58-48 lead with 9:13 to go. Eugene Lawrence had 22 points for the Red Storm (12-15, 5-11), who will miss the Big East tournament for the third straight year.

It was the fifth time this season Douby scored at least 30 points and the third time in six games. His season best was 41 at Syracuse. The last of Douby's six threes made it 73-61 with 3:01 left and it started a 7-0 run that gave Rutgers its biggest lead, 77-61 with 1:06 to go. Douby came within five points of the Carnesecca Arena record for points by an opponent set by Ernie DiGregorio of Providence in 1973. Junior swingman Marquis Webb added 12 points for Rutgers.

The Scarlet Knights received tremendous contributions off the bench from three players.. Senior center Jimmie Inglis came off the bench with 10 points. Junior center Frank Russell posted career highs in points (9), rebounds (5) and minutes (22), while junior guard Shayle Keating played a solid, steady 11 minutes, grabbing five rebounds and dishing out three assists.

Lamont Hamilton had 14 points for the Red Storm.

POSTGAME NOTES

WITH THE WIN
With the win over St. John’s, the Scarlet Knights finish the regular season with a 17-12 record overall, and 7-9 in the BIG EAST. Rutgers locked up the 10th seed for the upcoming BIG EAST Tournament (March 8-11 at Madison Square Garden) and will face cross-state rival Seton Hall in the first round (March 8 at 7 p.m.).

RUTGERS’ BIG EAST WINS
Rutgers finished the regular season with a 7-9 mark in BIG EAST action, tied for its third highest Conference win total ever (the Scarlet Knights won nine league games in 1998-99, eight in 2001-02, and seven in 2003-04).

Rutgers also finished with three wins on the road in BIG EAST play in 2005-06, tied for its best Conference road win total since joining the BIG EAST in all sports in 1995-96 (Rutgers also won three road games in 1998-99).

DOUBY SCORES WITH THE BEST
Junior guard Quincy Douby concluded the BIG EAST season with a 27.0 scoring average in Conference action (432 total points in 16 games).  Douby’s 27.0 average is the fourth best single season mark in BIG EAST history, behind only Troy Bell of Boston College (27.8 ppg in 2002-03), Dan Callandrillo of Seton Hall (27.4 ppg in 1981-82) and Eric Murdock of Providence (27.2 ppg in 1990-91).

Douby is also averaging 25.1 points overall for the season.

DOUBY BREAKS 700-POINT BARRIER FOR SEASON
With 36 points vs. St. John’s, junior guard Quincy Douby became only the third Rutgers player to score 700 or more points in a single season concluding the 2005-06 regular season with 728 points. All-America guard Bob Lloyd scored 809 points in 29 games in the 1966-67 season (averaging 27.9 points per game), and center James Bailey scored 730 points (23.5) in the 1977-78 campaign.

DOUBY DOUBLES
Junior guard Quincy Douby scored 36 points vs. St. John’s, the 35th consecutive game that he has scored in double figures dating back to the 2004-05 season. He has led Rutgers in scoring in 26 straight games, and 27 of 29 games this season.

DOUBY OVER 30
Junior guard Quincy Douby went over the 30-point mark for the sixth time in his career, and fifth time this season, with 36 points against St. John’s. Douby has now scored 20 or more in nine consecutive games, and in 22 of his last 26 contests.

QUINCY FROM THREE
Junior guard Quincy Douby has hit at least one three-point field goal in 26 consecutive games this season. Douby was 6-of-9 from three point-range vs. St. John’s. The last time he was blanked beyond the three-point stripe was on Nov. 25 against Kent State (0-for-3), the third game of the season. Overall this season, Douby has hit at least one three-point field goal in 27 of 29 games.

RUSSELL OFF THE BENCH
Junior center Frank Russell gave the Scarlet Knights a lift off the bench with a career-high nine points. Russell’s previous career best was a 4-point effort earlier this season vs. Maine. Russell also established career highs in minutes played (22) and rebounds (5). For the season, Russell has converted 11-of-14 field goals (.786) from the field.
