PISCATAWAY, NJ - Former Rutgers midfielder Josh Gros, now a player with Major League Soccer's DC United, has been named to the 2006 MLS All-Star Game roster. It is the first All-Star appearance for Gros since joining the league in 2004. Gros played four seasons for the Scarlet Knights (2000-03), winning numerous awards and setting several records before beginning his professional soccer career with MLS.
While at Rutgers, Gros was named the 2003 BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year in addition to being named to the 2003 All-BIG EAST First Team. During that season, he tallied 16 goals and five assists for 37 points to finish 10th in the Rutgers single-season record book for points and goals. As a senior, Gros was among the national leaders in scoring, finishing 15th in goals (0.73) and 21st in points (1.68) per game. He ended his soccer career at Rutgers with 60 points on 22 goals and 16 assists.
His outstanding play at Rutgers caught the attention of Major League Soccer. In January 2004, just months after finishing his collegiate playing career, Gros was drafted by DC United as the fourth pick in the fourth round (34th overall).
Major League Soccer announced July 17 that Gros was on its list of 2006 All-Stars. Gros joins DC teammates Freddy Adu, Bobby Boswell, Alecko Eskandarian, Christian Gomez, Jaime Moreno, and Troy Perkins on the All-Star roster.
Gros has played all 19 games this season for DC United, scoring two goals and recording four assists. In 2005, Gros scored two goals and added four assists. His goal against Columbus on May 7, 2005, won Goal of the Week Honors.
Gros began his rookie season with DC United in 2004 and quickly went from a part-time player to a full-time starter, becoming the first DC United draft pick to log more than 2,000 minutes since the club's inaugural season. As a rookie, he was a part of the DC United team that went on to become the 2004 MLS Cup Champions.
The 11th annual MLS All-Star Game will be played against Chelsea FC on Aug. 5 in Bridgeview, Ill. Chelsea is the reigning back-to-back English Premier League champion. The game will be shown live on ESPN at 6:30 p.m.
