Providence Gets First Win Over Rutgers
Sep 10 | Men's Soccer
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -The Rutgers men's soccer team (1- 4, 0-2 BIG EAST) lost 2-0 to BIG EAST opponent Providence College (4-1, 2-0 BIG EAST) in Providence, R.I. The Scarlet Knights' offense out-shot the Friars, 17-12, but failed to put the ball in the net as the team dropped its second BIG EAST match of the weekend.
The match remained scoreless for the first 45 minutes of play, despite several scoring opportunities for each team. Rutgers' Kyle Grato (Princeton Junction, N.J.) fired a free kick from 35 yards out that was saved by Providence goalie Chris Konopka to end the scoring threat and both teams went into halftime with a 0-0 tie.
Providence's offense came alive in the second period of play, though, as Hadrien Toure and Alex Bury each scored goals in the half. Toure was able to head the ball into the goal in the 49th minute of play and just over 10 minutes later, Bury scored the match's second goal on a direct free kick for his third goal of the season.
Sean Cameron (North Brunswick, N.J.) led Rutgers with four shots while teammates Grato and Adam Sternberger (Mays Landing, N.J.) each finished with three. RU goalie Matt VanOekel (Chesapeake, Va.) made four saves for the Scarlet Knights while his Providence counterpart Konopka made six saves.
Rutgers returns home next weekend to take on two more BIG EAST opponents at Yurcak Field. Seton Hall (3-2, 0-1 BIG EAST) visits Rutgers Friday, Sept. 15 at 7:00 p.m., followed by Georgetown (2-4, 1-1 BIG EAST), Sunday, Sept. 17, at 2:00 p.m.
