Rutgers Drops 2-0 Decision to Albany

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Rutgers field hockey team (3-6) fell to Albany (6-2) 2-0, finishing a four-game homestand Sept. 17 at the RU Stadium Complex.
RU exerted the early pressure with three shots and three penalty corners during the first 4:30, but the Great Danes took control of the game at that point, owing a 5-0 edge in shots and 9-0 advantage in corners during the remainder of the first half. Albany was able to get on the scoreboard as a result of that pressure when Teska Koch scored off a penalty corner at the 12:07 mark.
Albany tacked on a second goal late in the second period when Michelle Simpson was awarded a penalty stroke. Simpson converted with 7:06 remaining in the game to give the Great Danes a 2-0 lead.
"Every time we penetrated the 50 (yard line), Albany played very good team defense," said fourth-year Rutgers head coach Liz Tchou. "That is a credit to them. They were probably the best defensive team we have faced this year in terms of making clean tackles."
Junior Rosalyn Wentko (Dallas, Pa.), a selection to last week's BIG EAST Honor Roll, had four saves during the first 35 minutes of play. Freshman Leslie Kelly (Glassboro, N.J.) made one stop during the second half.
"This was a very different kind of game than the one we played (Friday) against Syracuse," said Corinne Bach (Moorestown, N.J.). "It was a completely different pace and strategy. Albany was extremely structured and much more deliberate with the ball. Today was a midfield battle, very back and forth, and we just couldn't put together any goals."
Rutgers will resume BIG EAST Conference play Friday, Sept. 22, at Villanova at 7:00 p.m.
