PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers sophomore running back Ray Rice (New Rochelle, N.Y.) has been added to the watch list for the 70th annual Maxwell Award, which honors the Collegiate Football Player of the Year.
Rice joins seniors fullback Brian Leonard (Gouverneur, N.Y.) and tight end Clark Harris (Manahawkin, N.J.), who were each named to the award's preseason watch list.
Through Rutgers' first three games, Rice is fourth in the nation in rushing yardage and scoring. He is averaging 166 yards per game with six touchdowns in his first three games. Rice has five consecutive 100-yard performances, dating back to last season. His best effort came in a season-opening road victory over North Carolina when the sophomore running back rushed for 201 yards and three touchdowns. He was named the Cingular All-America Player of the Week for his efforts against the Tar Heels.
The list includes players who have distinguished themselves as All-Conference or All-America selections in their careers. The watch list was announced by Maxwell Football Club President Ron Jaworski, the former great quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles.
Twelve semi-finalists for the Maxwell Award will be announced in October and the field will be trimmed to three finalists in November. The winner of the Maxwell k Award will be announced in December, and the formal presentation of the Maxwell Award will take place at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Banquet in March 2007.
Rutgers hosts Howard at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday at Rutgers Stadium in the finale of a three-game homestand for the Scarlet Knights.
