No. 15 Friars Escape with Win over Scarlet Knights
Sep 30 | Field Hockey
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Rutgers field hockey team (4-9, 0-3 BIG EAST) lost a 2-1 decision at 15th-ranked BIG EAST Providence (11-1, 2-0 BIG EAST). Sarah Dunn (Eaton, N.Y.) provided the only offense for the Scarlet Knights, as she scored her first goal of the season against the Friars.
All of the game's scoring for both teams occurred in the first half of play, and despite out-shooting Rutgers by an 18-3 mark, Providence could manage just two goals against RU starting goalie Rosalyn Wentko (Dallas, Pa.), who made 10 saves.
Providence's Jessica Weinstein got the scoring started at the 1:09 mark in the first half to give her team the 1-0 lead. RU responded just over five minutes later when Dunn scored to tie the game at one. Karen Brewster had an assist on the goal, which was Dunn's first of the season. The game remained tied until the last minute of play in the first half when Melissa McGow scored an unassisted goal to put Providence team ahead 2-1 at the half.
Rutgers' defense managed to shut-down Providence in the second half of play, allowing the Friars just four shots. Unfortunately, RU's offense could manage just shot in the half, and Providence escaped with the 2-1 win.
Scarlet Knights head coach Liz Tchou was disappointed with the outcome, but not with the effort from her team.
"It was a hard-fought game, just like all BIG EAST games are. It hurt to get behind, but we fought back and made it a game in the second half," Tchou said. "We just need to get more shots and scoring opportunities."
Wentko expressed similar thoughts.
"Providence is always a tough team," she said. "We definitely had more opportunities in the second half than we had in the first, though. We were able to play them (Providence) to a draw in all areas of the field in the second half."
Rutgers will return home to host another BIG EAST opponent, Georgetown, on Friday, Oct. 7, at 7:30 p.m. at the RU Stadium Complex.
