Rutgers Shuts Out St. John's 1-0
Oct 19 | Women's Soccer
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Kristen Edmonds (Metuchen, N.J.) scored in the 23rd minute and the Rutgers defense did the rest in a 1-0 win over BIG EAST foe St. John's. The Scarlet Knights (7-7-2, 2-4-2) relied on a swarming defense that limited the Red Storm to eight shots, but only two in the second half.
"As we near the end of the season it is all about getting points," said head coach Glenn Crooks. "It is nice to be in the win column. We were not completely satisfied with the way we played, but we were composed and disciplined, and we worked hard to defend. In the second half especially we never really gave them a clear opportunity at the goal."
On the game's only score, Domenique Esposito (Rivervale, N.J.) picked up her first assist of the season, kicking the ball down the field to Edmonds in the left corner of the box. Edmonds made a nice move to lose her defender, and then drilled the ball into the bottom corner of the net past goalie Jaime Beran.
"We are looking to get more offensive production," said Crooks. "We need to score more goals in the final three games of the season. We had many opportunities tonight so that is something we can build on."
One of those chances came with 10:12 remaining in the game, when Gina DeMaio (Parsippany, N.J.) took a pass from Courtney Roarty (Edison, N.J.) at the top of the box, made a quick move to the right, and then drilled a shot that was saved by the Red Storm keeper, who finished with three saves.
Rutgers sophomore goalie Erin Guthrie (Sparta, N.J.) had two saves in the win, picking up her seventh shutout of the season and the 21st of her career.
Rutgers returns to Yurcak field on Sunday, Oct. 21, when they face BIG EAST opponent Syracuse at 1 p.m.
