PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Rutgers women's basketball team, the 2007 NCAA runner-up, has been predicted as one of the nation's top five teams in a host of preseason national polls.
Several publications and web sites have forecast their votes for the upcoming 2007-08 women's basketball season. Rutgers is ranked third by three forecasters, Lindy's Sports Annuals, CBSSports.com and CSTV.com. The Scarlet Knights earned a preseason number four ranking from both The Sporting News and Athlon Sports. The web site Gballmag.com picked RU fifth in its preseason poll.
Rutgers returns 98.7 percent of its scoring power, which includes five starters and nine letterwinners, from a squad that finished 27-9 overall and captured its first-ever BIG EAST Tournament crown. The Scarlet Knights played in their 18th NCAA Championship, advancing to the school's second Final Four appearance this past season.
RU opens its season with an exhibition game versus the national team of China at the Louis Brown Athletic Center on Nov. 8 at 7:30 p.m. Rutgers will face 16 teams who qualified for last year's NCAA Tournament on the hardcourt this season, including six teams who were either No. 1 or No. 2 seeds.
The BIG EAST media day takes place on Thursday, Oct. 25 in New York City in which the annual league preseason poll will be released.
