PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers women's soccer senior co-captain Meghan Ryan (Crofton, Md.) was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week after anchoring a defense that shut out two opponents in a 2-0-0 week.
In a 1-0 victory over St. John's on Friday night, the Rutgers defense held the Red Storm to eight shots, but only two on goal. In the second half of that game, the Scarlet Knights defense buckled down and did not allow a single shot on goal to hold on for the win.
On Sunday afternoon, RU's second-half defense was solid again, as they limited Syracuse to only one shot on goal in a 2-0 victory. This is the first BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week honor for Ryan.
After posting two shutouts during the week, sophomore goalie Erin Guthrie (Sparta, N.J.) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. Guthrie now has eight clean sheets for the season and 22 for her career, good for fourth-place in Rutgers all-time history. This marks the third time Guthrie has been named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll this season.
