NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. - Despite double digit kills from Kyra Thompson (Tuscon, Ariz.) and Lauren Voss (Hartland, Wis.), the Rutgers University volleyball team was unable to overcome a potent Cincinnati attack as the Scarlet Knights fell 3-0 (30-20, 30-15, 30-27) Friday evening at the College Avenue Gym.
The Scarlet Knights (3-16, 1-8 BIG EAST) controlled the net for much of the night as they posted 10 blocks to only four from the Bearcats. However, Cincinnati (15-9, 6-4 BIG EAST) used a balanced attack of four players posting double digits in kills to record the win.
Thompson led RU with 14 kills, while Voss added 10 kills and four digs. Stephanie Moore (Dallas, Texas) stepped in for an injured Emma Chrystal (Portage, Mich.) to lead the team with 13 assists. Jamie Godfrey (Rahway, N.J.) tallied a match-high 16 digs. The Scarlet Knights played without three starters who were out with injuries.
Jessie Nevitt posted a match-high 14 kills for the Bearcats, while Annie Fesl recorded a match-high 40 assists.
"I thought Cincinnati played more consistent early on," said head coach Orlando Gonzalez. "We had a brand new lineup because of all the injuries, so we had to fight through it and play hard. I think we did that tonight."
The Scarlet Knights will continue their four-match home stand Sunday, Oct. 28 when they take on No. 25 Louisville. The match will be at the College Avenue Gym at 2 p.m.
