Rutgers Volleyball Blanked in Match-Up With Villanova

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. - Senior Amanda Meyer (Naperville, Ill.)  returned to the Rutgers line-up after missing five matches with an injury, but her presence wasn't enough as the Villanova Wildcats swept the Rutgers University volleyball team Saturday afternoon at the College Avenue Gym.

With the 3-0 (30-16, 30-19, 30-20) win, Villanova takes sole possession of third place in the BIG EAST conference with a 16-10 overall record and an 8-4 mark in conference play. The Scarlet Knights fall to 3-18 overall and 1-10 in the BIG EAST.

Sophomore Kyra Thompson (Tuscon, Ariz.) led RU with seven kills to go along with nine digs, while Meyerand sophomore Sophie Cook (Colorado Springs, Colo.) added six kills apiece.

The Wildcats were led by Alona Cherkez, who posted a match-high 21 kills on only 35 attempts for a .457 hitting percentage. Chelsea Graman tallied a match-high 49 assists in the victory.

"We struggled with every part of our game today," said head coach Orlando Gonzalez. "To beat team's like this we have to play better as a team, bottom line."

The Scarlet Knights will play their final match of the season at home Sunday against Seton Hall. The match is set to begin at 2 p.m. and it will be the final home match for lone senior Amanda Meyer. A four-year member of the Rutgers volleyball team, Meyer has amassed some very impressive stats during her career. The middle-hitter has 527 kills, 197 total blocks, and 87 digs through her four seasons at Rutgers.
