NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. - The Rutgers University volleyball team was unable to come up with a victory in its season finale at the College Avenue Gym Sunday afternoon. The Seton Hall Pirates extended their four-match winning streak by upending the Scarlet Knights 3-0 (30-27, 30-21, 30-23).
Rutgers falls to 3-19 overall and 1-11 in the BIG EAST, while Seton Hall improves to 15-11 overall and 5-7 in conference action.
Sophomore Kyra Thompson (Tuscon, Ariz.) recorded another stellar game with a team-high 15 kills to go along with nine digs. Freshman Alexis Williams (Wichita Falls, Texas) led RU with 14 digs and junior Roxy Calder (Oceanside, Calif.) paced the Scarlet Knights in the assist category with a team-high 20.
The first game was full of back-and-forth action as both teams traded points on numerous occasions until a 3-0 Seton Hall run gave the Pirates an 18-15 lead. Over the next six points, Thompson would record three kills to draw RU within one at 20-19. Seton Hall would bump its lead to three at 23-20 before another pair of Thompson kills would bring RU within one once again. Thompson's stellar play wouldn't be enough though as the Pirates won three of the final four points to capture the game 30-27.
Seton Hall would carry the momentum from the first game to a 6-3 run early in the second game. RU would get to within two at 6-4, but the Pirates pulled away with a 7-1 run to take command of the second game. Seton Hall would lead by as many as 12 before a late Scarlet Knights run closed the gap to 30-21.
Once again the Pirates were able to jump on the Scarlet Knights early in the third game, taking a 7-1 lead. Rutgers would counter though with a 12-7 run to pull to within one at 14-13. Seton Hall would win the next three points though and seven of the next nine to take command of the game at 21-15. One last push from the Scarlet Knights came as Thompson capped off back-to-back RU points with an ace to bring her team within four. However, Seton Hall ended the game and the match with a 9-5 run to get the victory.
The Pirates were led by Tricia Meyers and Allie Matters, who combined for 29 kills and 13 digs. The BIG EAST victory is Seton Hall's third-straight in conference games.
The Scarlet Knights will hit the road for their final three matches of the 2007 season. RU will next be in action against non-conference foe Fordham on Wednesday, Nov. 10 at 7 p.m.
Senior Amanda Meyer (Naperville, Ill.) was honored in a ceremony after the second game. The lone senior has been a four-year starter for Rutgers and has amassed 534 kills and 198 blocks in her career
