Montero Named to Academic All-District First Team

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers women's soccer junior back Nina Montero (Vineland, N.J.) has been named to the 2007 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District???? II First Team. Montero majors in English with a minor in philosophy and carries a GPA of 3.861.
"Nina epitomizes the term 'student-athlete,'" said her academic advisor, Randi Larson. "As an honors student she places a strong emphasis on her success in the classroom which translates to her diligence and determination on the soccer field. She is a model student and a model citizen who actively participates in the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and other campus activities."
Montero served as a co-captain this season, helping to lead a defense that shut out 10 opponents. Last season, she played in all 22 games with 20 starts, as the Scarlet Knights shut out a school-record 16 opponents, reached the BIG EAST Championship and the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
This award marks the second time Montero has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District???? team. In 2006 she was named to the District II Second team. Although Montero has not decided what direction her career will go after graduation, she wants to stay in touch with athletics. She is also interested in teaching at the college level.
