Rutgers' Carson Selected Candidate for Lowe's Senior
Dec 07 | Women's Basketball
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers guard Essence Carson (Paterson, N.J.) has been named a candidate for the 2007-08 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award, given annually to the NCAA Division I Student-Athlete of the Year in women's college basketball.
The acronym "CLASS" stands for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School and recognizes athletes in eight sports. The award recognizes the 'Four C's"- classroom, character, community and competition. The award winner will be recognized during the Final Four.
The award is in its seventh year on the basketball side. Former RU standout Cappie Pondexter was a member of the senior CLASS five-member team in 2006. Chelsea Newton was a candidate for the honor in 2005.
Carson is among 30 candidates for the accolade and only one of two to represent the BIG EAST conference.
Carson is averaging 11.0 points and 5.7 rebounds per game for the Scarlet Knights. She is a member of the preseason watch lists for the Wade Trophy and Wooden Women's Award. In addition, the two-time defending BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year was named to the league's preseason squad.
The Scarlet Knights (5-2), ranked No. 4 in this week's Associated Press Top-25 Poll and No. 3 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches' Poll, takes on Army on Saturday, Dec. 8 at 2:00 p.m. in the Maggie Dixon Classic. The contest, to be played at Madison Square Garden, is a homecoming for RU's three New York City products: Kia Vaughn, Epiphanny Prince and Brittany Ray.
