Rutgers Edged at St. John's 60-55

QUEENS, N.Y. - Sophomore forward JR Inman (Pomona, N.Y.) scored 16 points for the Rutgers men's basketball team (10-16, 3-10), but a late rally by St. John's secured the game for the Red Storm, 60-55, on Thursday at Carnesecca Arena.

The game was tied 21-21 at halftime, with the lead changing eight times after that.  The final tie of the night came with 50.4 left on the clock with the score at 52-52.  The Red Storm's Avery Patterson sank a triple with time winding down to break the tie and gain a three-point lead. 

Senior guard Marquis Webb (Patterson, NJ) connected on two free throws with 13 seconds remaining to make it 58-54.  St. John's (15-11, 6-7) Qa'rraan Calhoun responded with two free throws one second later to give the Red Storm their final two points.  Webb would also score the last point for the Scarlet Knights, making one more free throw with eight seconds remaining in the game. 

Senior forward Adrian Hill (Canton, Ohio) was the only other Rutgers player to score in double digits, recording 13 points.  Sophomore guard Courtney Nelson (Newark, NJ) added nine, while Webb chipped in seven points. The Scarlet Knights shot 46 percent (22-of-47) from the field, beating St. John's 40 percent (21-of-52).  However, RU shot only 27 percent (3-of-11) from three-point range while the Red Storm shot 42 percent (9-of-21).

Patterson finished with 11 points, one of four St. John's players to score in double digits.  Eugene Lawrence and Calhoun each recorded 13 points, and Lamont Hamilton added 11. 

Rutgers will next host Connecticut on Wednesday, Feb. 21, at the Louis Brown Athletic Center.  The game will be televised live on FSN, and tip off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
