Marchitello Earns BIG EAST Weekly Lacrosse Honors

PISCATAWAY, N.J.  - Rutgers senior defender Anne Marchitello (Medford Lakes, N.J./Shawnee) was named to BIG EAST Defender of the Week, the league announced Monday afternoon.

Marchitello, a second team BIG EAST honoree a season ago, helped lift the Scarlet Knights to their first season-opening win since 1999 this past weekend.  Rutgers upset No. 11 Cornell, 11-10 in double overtime on Saturday. The victory was the first for RU in 10 tries over the Big Red.

Marchitello, beginning her third season as starter, recorded two ground balls and caused two turnovers to help propel the Scarlet Knights to the win.

Sophomore Michelle Poole (Hackettstown, N.J./West Morris) also received BIG EAST accolades, being named to the weekly honor roll.

With the win, Rutgers received national attention. The Scarlet Knights cracked the latest Inside Lacrosse Women's Division I Media Poll, entering at No. 19. North Carolina holds down the top spot in the poll released every Monday and voted on by various members of the media.

RU (1-0) will entertain Villanova on Wed., February 28 with first draw at 7:00 p.m. The contest will be played on the RU Turf field.
