No. 22 Women’s Lacrosse Loses to No. 19 Penn State

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – No. 22 Rutgers women's lacrosse (10-7, 4-4) lost to No. 19 Penn State (12-5, 4-4), 18-15, on Saturday night at SHI Stadium. With the loss, the Scarlet Knights are the No. 6 seed in next week's Big Ten Tournament and will face No. 3 seed Johns Hopkins on April 22 in Ann Arbor.
Prior to the game, RU recognized eight student-athletes for Senior Day – Katie Buck, Ava Chiarella, Kayleigh Coughlin, Erin Devine, Lily Dixon, Gianna Eglauf, Kimberly Greenblatt, and Simone Koryszewski. The senior class has combined for 34 victories, four consecutive Big Ten Tournament appearances and back-to-back Big Ten semifinals since it arrived in 2023.
Sophomore Delainey Sutley scored a team-high five goals to pace Rutgers' offense, while Dixon tallied five points on three assists and two goals. Dixon, junior Alex Popham, sophomore Hilary Elsner and rookie Kate Theofield all tallied multiple scores against the Nittany Lions.
Rookie Ellie Racki earned her first career start and notched six saves in the loss. Senior Katie Buck and sophomore Charlee Thomas produced seven and six draw controls, respectively. Sophomore Maddie Miceli caused a team-high three turnovers.
It was a back-and-forth first half, with six lead changes in the opening 30 minutes of action. The Scarlet Knights netted the first goal of the night thanks to Sutley, who finished a pass from freshman Annalise Messina for an early 1-0 lead three minutes in. The score tied four times in the first quarter before a late goal from PSU gave the visitors a 5-4 advantage heading into the second quarter.
RU tied the game two more times before the midpoint, including an unassisted score from Theofield with 4:52 remaining in the quarter to make it 6-6. Penn State added back-to-back goals before a late goal from Dixon made it 8-7 Nittany Lions at halftime.
Theofield's second goal of the night tied the score at 9-9 in the third quarter before PSU went on a 6-0 run for a 15-9 advantage. Rutgers fought back with three goals in the final four minutes of the quarter, as Penn State took a four-goal lead into the final quarter.
The Scarlet Knights netted three goals in the fourth, including Sutley's fifth of the night, to get within three. However, the Nittany Lions held on for the win.
