Piscataway, N.J. - Rutgers University and head women's basketball coach C. Vivian Stringer have agreed in principal to a new seven-year contract, it was announced today by Director of Athletics Robert E. Mulcahy III.
Stringer is guaranteed a base salary of $450,000 with additional compensation and incentives that could bring the total contract value to $950,000 per year. Increased financial resources generated through the new BIG EAST television contract, corporate sponsorships and ticket sales will fund the contract increase.
"There is no question this contract is well-deserved and reflects the success of the program and its status among the nation's elite," said Mulcahy. "We are proud of what Coach Stringer has accomplished at Rutgers. She is committed to the total development of our student-athletes, and the overall performance of the program during her tenure is a testament to that commitment."
Stringer, 59, boasts a 777-260 mark in her illustrious 36-year career, ranking her third in victories among Division I women's basketball coaches. She was the first coach- male or female - to take three different schools to the Final Four. In 12 seasons at Rutgers, Stringer has compiled a 257-125 ledger.
Rutgers President Richard L. McCormick added, "We are very proud of what Coach Stringer has accomplished with the women's basketball program, both on and off the court. She is a mentor and a role model, and we are thrilled she will finish her amazing career at Rutgers."
The Scarlet Knights enjoyed unparalleled success on the court in 2006-07, advancing to the NCAA championship game for the first time in school history. Rutgers concluded the regular season with a 27-9 ledger, winning the program's first BIG EAST tournament title. The Scarlet Knights return all five starters and 10 team members next fall.
