TAMPA, Fla. - Former Rutgers men's soccer player Sean Cameron (North Brunswick, N.J.) was named the United Soccer Leagues First Division Player of the Week, the conference announced. Cameron, a member of Miami FC, earned the honor after recording a goal and an assist, both his first of the season, in the club's 3-2 victory over the Seattle Sounders on April 27.
Miami FC currently has a 2-1 record on the season, with Cameron having seen playing time in two of the three games. Cameron, who is now playing midfield after playing two seasons at back for Rutgers, has played a total of 143 minutes in those two games. He has one goal, one assist and has taken nine shots.
Cameron was one of four players to sign with Miami FC in late January. He transferred to Rutgers from the University of Connecticut in 2005 and started 34 of the 35 games in which he played during his two seasons as a Scarlet Knight. The defender started 17 of 18 games during his senior season in 2006, finishing with a goal and two assists as a back. His play on defense helped hold opponents to a 0.78 goal-per-game average and he was part of a defensive effort that held No. 4 West Virginia goalless in Rutgers' BIG EAST semifinal game on Nov. 3, 2006.
Miami's next game is against the Montreal Impact on Saturday, May 5, at 8:00 p.m. at FC's Tropical Park Stadium.
