Rutgers Guard Matee Ajavon Named to Pan American Team

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers guard Matee Ajavon (Newark, N.J.) has been named to the 12-member 2007 USA Women's Pan American Games squad, as announced by USA Basketball on Monday.
From a pool of 15 finalists, the roster was selected by the USA Basketball Women's Collegiate Committee, chaired by Sue Donohoe, the NCAA's vice president of Division I women's basketball. The squad was trimmed to 12 after three days of training camp in Washington, D.C.
Ajavon, who missed the start of the 2006-07 campaign with an injury, averaged 12.0 points this season which included a 13.7 average during the Scarlet Knight's amazing NCAA tournament run. After two 20-plus point performances against Duke and Arizona State, she was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Greensboro Regional.
At the 2007 BIG EAST Championship tournament, Ajavon earned the Most Outstanding Player trophy. The flashy point guard owned 17.3 points, 3.7 assists and 3.0 rebounds in the three tournament games. In 2004, Ajavon competed at the USA Basketball Junior National Team trials and at the 2003 Developmental Festival, she helped lead the East Team to a gold medal with 7.4 points per game.
Joining Ajavon will be Tennessee's Nicky Anosike and Alexis Hornbuckle, Jayne Appel and Candice Wiggins from Stanford, UConn's Mel Thomas and Charde' Houston, Marissa Coleman (Maryland), Emily Fox (Minnesota), Tasha Humphrey (Georgia), Erlana Larkins (North Carolina), Angel McCoughtry (Louisville).
The USA Pan Am squad will continue training in Washington, D.C., through July 16 when they depart for Brazil.
