PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers registered a 3-1 victory over West Chester in collegiate field hockey on Sunday evening at RU Stadium Complex. The Scarlet Knights concluded their first weekend of play with a pair of victories, their first 2-0 start to a season since 2005.
Junior Amy Lewis (Hainesport, N.J.) kept up her feverish scoring pace, netting a pair in the game and moving her season total to five in just two contests. Senior Catherine Badolato (Berlin, N.J.) scored her first goal of the season.
Senior Corinne Bach (Moorestown, N.J.) added two assists, raising her season total to four. Sophomore Kristen Johnson (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) and junior Caitlin Browne (Middletown, N.J.) each had an assist for the Scarlet Knights.
Lewis scored the game's first score in the 20th minute of play off a corner taken by Johnson and set up by Bach. Lewis dribbled to her left and fired a hard shot into the left middle side of the cage to put RU ahead, 1-0.
Seventeen minutes later, the Scarlet Knights added to their lead. Badolato did it alone, launching from 10 yards out to the right side and past Golden Rams goalie Joelle Zarefoss for her first tally of the year.
Another RU penalty corner and the finish by Lewis would lead to the third goal of the game. Browne and Bach assisted on the score at the 45:49 mark.
With 14 minutes to go, the shutout was lost when West Chester's Shelly Brooks scored on a penalty stroke. Rutgers' defense did the rest, allowing just two West Chester shots the remainder of the game.
Senior goalie Rosalyn Wentko (Dallas, Pa.) had five saves and the team garnered one for the Scarlet Knights.
The Scarlet Knights travel to Lafayette on Wednesday, August 29 for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
