Rutgers Volleyball Splits Two Matches at Marist Tournament

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - The Rutgers University volleyball team split two matches at the "Volley in the Valley" Tournament held at Marist University Friday. The Scarlet Knights topped Quinnipiac, 3-0, to earn their first win of the season before falling to host Marist, 3-0, in the final match of the day.

In the opening match, freshman Katie Groff (York, Pa.) led the way for RU, posting a game-high 12 kills to go along with four digs. Junior Roxy Calder (Oceanside, Calif.) and freshman Emma Chrystal (Portage, Mich.) continued to split the setting duties as the duo combined for 22 assists. The Scarlet Knights, who won the match 30-16, 30-15, 30-23, out blocked Quinnipiac, 9-3 and out aced the Bobcats, 10-1.

Against Marist, the Scarlet Knights were unable to stop sophomore outside hitter Alexandra Schultze, who posted a team-high 21 kills and hit at a .362 clip. The win was the fourth consecutive victory by the Red Foxes and improves their record to 4-2. Groff led Rutgers, which fell to 1-3 overall, with 11 kills. Sophomore Jamie Godfrey (Rahway, N.J.) tallied a team-high 11 digs in the 30-20, 30-21, 30-28 loss.

Rutgers will be back in action Saturday, Sept. 1, when the Scarlet Knights take on Army at 6 p.m.
