PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Rutgers Women's Soccer team (4-0) travels to the Bay Area to face a pair of top-5 ranked teams in the Stanford Invitational this weekend. The Scarlet Knights will face No. 3 Santa Clara on Friday, Sept. 14, and No. 1 Stanford on Sunday, Sept. 16, at Maloney Field in Palo Alto, Calif.
The Scarlet Knights will be without Gina DeMaio (Parsippany, N.J.), who received a red card in the team's win over Monmouth on Sunday. They will also be missing Kristen Edmonds (Metuchen, N.J.), who is game to game with a shoulder injury. But coach Glenn Crooks knows this weekend will be a challenge regardless of who suits up.
"This tournament is really the beginning of the meat of our schedule," said the seventh-year head coach. "Facing two top-5 programs in Santa Clara and Stanford will be a good test for our team."
Sophomore Karla Schacher (Tofield, Alberta) leads the team offensively with three goals and six points. Erin Guthrie (Sparta, N.J.) has played her usual stellar defense, giving up only one goal in four games. She was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for her work in wins against Bucknell (2-1) and Monmouth (1-0).
Santa Clara and Stanford have both beaten fellow BIG EAST member Notre Dame this season. Santa Clara (2-0-1) ran roughshod over the Fighting Irish in a 7-1 win on Sept. 7, while Stanford (4-0) won a closer match, 2-1 on Sept. 9.
The Scarlet Knights will return home to begin BIG EAST play on Sept. 21 at Yurcak Field against Seton Hall.
