NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. - The Rutgers University volleyball team swept Norfolk State 3-0 (30-21, 30-15, 30-19) in its home opener at the College Avenue Gym Friday evening.
Senior Amanda Meyer (Naperville, Ill.) led the RU charge as she posted a team-high 12 kills on only 19 attempts for the Scarlet Knights. Rutgers improves to 2-7 on the year, while Norfolk State dropped its fourth straight match and fell to 1-11 on the season.
After missing the first eight matches of the season, sophomore Kyra Thompson (Tucson, Ariz.) returned in a big way with 11 kills and 10 digs.
"I think getting some of our experienced players back into the line-up stabilized us tonight," said head coach Orlando Gonzalez. "Our freshmen were able to play a lot better because of that."
Freshman Emma Chrystal (Portage, Mich.) tallied 13 assists, while junior setter Roxy Calder (Oceanside, Calif.) led RU with a season-high 19 assists. Freshman Danielle Lerch (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) added nine kills for the Knights, who doubled the Spartans in kills 51-25. Rutgers also dominated in serving, posting nine aces to Norfolk State's zero.
"The key of our match tonight is that we had zero receive errors and we didn't give away any easy points," said Gonzalez. "We served well and that allowed us to get a lot of things going offensively."
Rutgers will begin BIG EAST play on the road next Friday as the Scarlet Knights travel to Syracuse to take on the Orange at 7 p.m.
