NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. - Five Scarlet Knights recorded double figures in kills as the Rutgers University Volleyball Team picked up their first BIG EAST victory and remained undefeated at home by downing Georgetown, 3-2 (30-24, 30-27, 25-30, 23-30, 15-10), Friday evening at the College Avenue Gymnasium.
Rutgers, which is off to its first 2-0 start at home since the 2002 season, improves to 3-9 overall and 1-2 in the BIG EAST. The Hoyas fall to 4-13 overall and 0-3 in conference play.
Sophomore Kyra Thompson (Tuscon, Ariz.) led the Scarlet Knights in both kills and digs, posting a season-high 19 kills and a career-high 25 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Stephanie Moore (Dallas, Texas) posted a career-high 15 digs and hit at a .429 clip to lead Rutgers.
"I thought the team came out and did a great job early and got out to a quick lead which was key," said third-year head coach Orlando Gonzalez. "With a young squad it was critical to start hot and that really set the tone for the entire match."
After winning the first game 30-24, RU fell behind 8-2 in the second game before Gonzalez called a time out. After the timeout, the Scarlet Knights went on an 11-4 run to take their first lead of the game at 13-12. The game was knocked at 26-26 before Rutgers took over, recording three kills over the next five points to snatch the game 30-27.
The Scarlet Knights would come out quickly in the third game, taking a 10-4 lead, but the Hoyas began to play their best volleyball from that point on. GU won four straight points, including two aces from Dana Dumas, who led the Hoyas with 15 kills and five aces. Georgetown would take the third game 30-25 and carry that momentum into winning the fourth game 30-23.
In the decisive fifth game, RU would jump out to a 7-0 advantage behind the serving of junior Roxy Calder (Oceanside, Calif.). The Hoyas would fight back to within four at 14-10, but a Lauren Voss (Hartland, Wis.) kill would end the match at 15-10.
"We did a great job out of the gate in game five making them earn points," said Gonzalez. "We didn't kill ourselves which was crucial. Once we got the lead, the players were able to push the losses in games three and four behind them and play with confidence which was huge."
The Scarlet Knights will remain at home Sunday, Sept. 30 when they take on South Florida at College Avenue Gymnasium. The match is set for 2 p.m. and it will be Youth Day at "The Barn". Following the match, all fans in attendance are encouraged to come to court level to have their pictures taken with the team and get autographs from their favorite Scarlet Knights.
